Our Home with Mayor Sendzik

Our Home with Mayor Sendzik

Last month I filmed the summer season finale of Our Home with Mayor Sendzik on Cogeco TV.    This episode focussed on the City’s Enterprise Centre and the upcoming Celebration of Nations.

I was joined by Graham Lowe, Small Business Consultant with the City of St. Catharines and we discussed the many programs, seminars and resources that are available to entrepreneurs, small business and students in our community to assist them with starting or growing a business here in St. Catharines.

Later in the second half of the show, I welcomed Michele-Elise Burnett, Artistic Director and Tim Johnson, Artistic Producer from the highly anticipated Celebration of Nations taking place downtown St. Catharines 8-10 September 2017.

The Celebration of Nations is a three-day Indigenous arts event that will embrace and honour the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples within Canada.

For the past several years, our country has been learning more about the dark history and trauma our First Nations experienced in Canada, through the Truth and Reconciliation process.  The Celebration of Nations will celebrate and allow our residents and visitors to experience First Nations arts and culture.

The history of Canada’s Indigenous peoples is rich and diverse.  Through arts and culture,  it is important to recognize that healing is an ongoing process for our First Nations.  Arts and culture are a deep and important part of that healing and reconciliation process.  For years, First Nations cultures, ceremonies, traditions and languages were denigrated and suppressed.  Through the decades of the Residential School system, ancient and diverse cultures were virtually eliminated.

The Celebration of Nations gives us the opportunity to share, experience, and celebrate the stories, experiences and cultural traditions of our First Nations and leave a lasting legacy and understanding for future generations.
