Mayor Sendzik Launches Poetry Contest
Sharpen your pencils and bust out the dictionary, Mayor Walter Sendzik is challenging everyone to a poetry contest.
Mayor Sendzik invites all St. Catharines residents to submit an original poem about Downtown St.Catharines and what it means to them for his first ever Mayor’s Poetry Challenge.
All types of poetry will be accepted, and the winning scribe will get the chance to recite their poem at the April 18 City Council meeting.
“The idea behind the Mayor’s Poetry Challenge is to provide an opportunity for our local poets to share their talent,” explains Mayor W alter Sendzik. “
This is yet an other wonderful way to be inspired by the vibrant creative energy in our community. With our downtown as the theme, poets can draw on the transformation that is taking place within the heart of our city and capture it in a unique way for all o f us to experience.”
The Mayor’s Poetry Challenge coincides with Poetry Month in April to promote literacy, arts, culture and reading in our community.
The first Mayor’s Poetry Challenge in Canada was started by Calgary
Mayor Naheed Nenshi in collaboration with the League of Canadian Poets and the Writers’ Guild of Alberta.
Residents are asked to email their poems to firstname.lastname@example.org by March 30.
