Nov. 23, 2016 – The City of St. Catharines is working on a new plan to support local businesses and attract new investment. Residents, entrepreneurs and business leaders are invited to offer their ideas on how to continue economic growth for the community.

Visit www.stcatharines.ca/EcDevSurvey to offer input and participate in developing the City’s new economic development strategy.

To help develop the new strategy, the City retained Global Investment Attraction Group to identify goals, objectives and priorities for supporting a strong local economy. The strategy will identify a vision, core business sectors and opportunities for partnerships and collaboration for economic growth.

“Public input is an important part of the strategy,” said Brian York, the City’s director of economic development and government relations. “The business community and stakeholders can help us identify opportunities and trends in the local economy and ways that we can work together to achieve our mutual goals to attract investment, create jobs, and create a climate for business to prosper.”

Mayor Walter Sendzik said a new economic development strategy was identified as a key priority in Council’s Strategic Plan.

“From the number of new businesses opening downtown, to expansion and investment across the city and the region, St. Catharines has seen positive growth and momentum,” said Mayor Sendzik “This new strategy will ensure we are positioned to support businesses to stay and grow in St. Catharines and work together to achieve our economic goals and our vision to be the most dynamic, innovative, sustainable and livable city in North America.”

The City’s economic development team is part of Team Niagara, a group of economic development professionals who work collaboratively to encourage the attraction, expansion and retention of businesses in Niagara. The new economic development strategy will complement the Team Niagara Economic Development Action Plan and work to position Niagara as part of the global economy.
