Earth Day
Happy Earth Day. Today we take a moment to reaffirm our commitment to taking Climate Action – today and every day.
The City of St. Catharines as taken action to be the most sustainable city in North America – some of those action items include:
- Declared a Climate Emergency
- Climate Adaptation Plan ~ stay tuned on www.EngageSTC.ca for public comments
- Joined the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, pledging to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- 5k trees given away since 2017 to be planted on private property
- Seven bee hives to promote pollination / bee friendly community
- Converting floral displays into pollinator gardens
- Purchasing fully electric vehicles for municipal fleet
- Electric charging station at City Hall with more to come
- Banned sale of plastic water bottles + straws at municipal facilities
- Launch of new Waste Management Strategy
- Annual rain barrel sale
What are simple things you can do at home to make a difference?
- Compost and recycle
- Pick up garbage in your neighbourhood
- Use a reusable water bottle
- Turn off lights, TV etc when not in use
- Recycle & donate clothing
- Use eco-friendly cleaning products
- Dispose of batteries, paint, old electronics responsibly at waste collection centres
Take today as an opportunity to make a promise to yourself to do what you can to help our Earth and live a more sustainable life. Remember we only have one Earth – so let’s be good to her…there is no Planet B
