Mayor’s Poetry Contest Winner
Congratulations to Shelley Locke, winner of the Mayor’s Poetry Contest to celebrate Poetry Month in April and promote literacy, arts, culture and reading in our community.
Shelley loves adventure and has been on a creative journey for most of her like – writing and poetry and then to landscape design. She is a self-taught artist with a love for acrylic design. Although Shelley is no stranger to writing and poetry – this piece was new for her as she naturally writes in quatrain stanzas and this looser style was new to her.
I want to thank everyone who submitted an original piece, it was great to read all the different perspectives of the theme ‘Always Together’. I think you’ll enjoy this piece by Shelley.
Hope Floated
When reality froze
yet time still pulsed
The earth drifted
and life unhinged
Hope floated
The world revolved
with bated breath
This new existence
devoid of air
Hope floated
Our pale reflections
glow as star dust
Dreams unhinge
and shadows beckon
Hope floated
Seashell memories
gritty with sand
Humanity echoes
on trade wind breezes
Hope floated
Apart we found
our greatest strength
The call to bond
and heal our earth
Hope Floated
We shine our greatest
when all seems broken
Yet forged our links
for hope floated
