Thank you Emily Kovacs, Niagara Folk Arts Multicultural Centre and Councillor Karrie Porter for organizing the vigil that took place on Saturday – in memory of those who were killed in a senseless act of terrorism. We must stand up against hatred and violence.
Also – thank you to Brock University Security, Niagara Regional Police, EMS and City of St. Catharines staff for all their work over the weekend – helping to mitigate any St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
Congratulations to the Coptic Orthodox Church of St. George and St. Mercurius on laying the foundation stone for your new church. Looking forward to attending the first liturgy at your new house of worship to serve your growing community and Niagara.
Wishing our Jewish community a Happy Purim on March 20 as you celebrate the festival and commemorate the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia.
The Niagara IceDogs are going to the playoffs which means we have the Dog Run on St. Paul St before home games at 5:30 p.m. – hoping for a long playoff run!
March 20th marks the first annual School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day – thank you to our crossing guards for keeping our young residents safe with their daily commutes to and from school. OPA! Happy Greek Independence Day to our Greek community on March 25th – we will be raising the flag here at St. Catharines City Hall on March 23rd to commemorate the holiday.
Congratulations to – Trinity Arsenault on being selected to be part of Barbie’s Role Models series — a campaign celebrating the doll’s 60th anniversary! Nico Bumanglag aka Nixxxay who officially became recognized as one of the best players in Fortnite! Tessa Trojan who is currently representing Canada at the Special Olympics World in Abu Dhabi for the sport of golf – good luck to you and Dheiksha Jayasankar on being selected for team Canada to compete in international science fair in Phoenix, Arizona in May. All these young residents accomplishing great achievements.
We also have some upcoming events, with the start of Spring it means the opening of the Welland Canal. We have the Top Hat Ceremony on March 26th for the official opening – so make sure you download the app for bridge times. The Merritton Legion is celebrating 90 years here in St. Catharines – thank you for your service to veterans and for your ongoing support of the community.
Earth Hour is taking place on March 30th – so make sure you take the time to power down – turn off non essential lights, power down electronics and unplug chargers and devices that are not in use. It’s also a great time to spend time with family and friends, play a game and have some tech free time.
