Mayor’s state of the city celebrates pride and momentum in St. Catharines

Feb. 6, 2020 –  Community pride and accomplishments were at the forefront as Mayor Walter Sendzik delivered his sixth annual state of the city address today.

Mayor Sendzik highlighted the successes of the businesses, community leaders and residents that are building excitement and momentum in St. Catharines, all the while fostering community pride and garnering national attention.

“This state of the city is not about statistics or numbers. It is about how we feel about our city. Everywhere you look there are reasons to be proud and excited about the future of St. Catharines. From the Canada Summer Games and international sporting events bringing new investments and the national spotlight; to the next generation of industry and manufacturing; to the entrepreneurs and new businesses adding value and creating jobs, if we look, we can see signs of progress every day. The momentum is not slowing down.”

The event was hosted by the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce at Ridley College. Sponsored by Verge Insurance Group, 500 members of the business community came out to hear the Mayor’s address and Team STC awards presentation.

Team STC Awards

Together with the St. Catharines economic development team, Mayor Sendzik inducted three businesses into the Team STC Hall of Fame for their contributions in the community and abroad. The 2020 Team STC award recipients include:

  • Mountainview Homes, who won the Legacy Leader Award for more than 30 years as one of Niagara’s leading home builders.
  • Cheekbone Beauty, an Indigenous-owned, cruelty-free beauty company founded by Jennifer Harper and featured on CBC’s Dragons Den, was presented with a Future Leaders Award.
  • The Future Leaders Award was also given to Clickback, a software company founded in St. Catharines, which recently converted the former downtown police headquarters into a tech accelerator, Accel North.

“This year’s Team STC awards recipients represent the diverse spectrum of talent and entrepreneurial strength of our city. They are shining examples of successful businesses founded right here in St. Catharines,” said Brian York, director of economic development and government relations. “An innovative home builder that has built thousands of homes in the region; a high-end cosmetics company that has received national attention for innovative products and inspiring Indigenous youth; and a homegrown tech company that creates software used across the globe, these are incredible business leaders that we are proud to celebrate.”

Thanks to the community

STC Pride postcards – thank you for sharing!

Mayor Sendzik thanked community members who shared their memories and St. Catharines pride on social media as contributors to his speech. To wrap up the night, he distributed postcards of these images and memories to remind the audience to be proud of what has been accomplished, and to carry that pride forward in the years ahead.

The STC Pride postcards are all available on the Mayor’s Facebook page and at the Mayor’s Office at City Hall.

“I’m proud of who we are, our history, and what we have accomplished in the last few years. When you look back and realize how far we have come, you can really see how much more is possible if we continue to build on that positive energy and momentum. We will be able to overcome the challenges in front of us and build an even brighter future for the City of St. Catharines,” said Sendzik.
